Driving down Highway 114 you wouldn't know it was there. It doesn't look like much now, but it's what will be built here that has the city of Levelland excited. Chamber of Commerce President Mary Siders says, "It's a first for Levelland. It's great. It's a wonderful asset to our city." It is a Holiday Inn Express. She says, "We didn't have enough hotel space to fulfill the need for all the events we have, events like the Little Dribbler's tournament, music camps and UIL competitions at South Plains College keep tourists coming to Levelland year round. "
The Levelland Chamber of Commerce is also investing a lot of time and money promoting its Main Street District to keep those tourists shopping in town. Main Street Coordinator Debbie Wuerflein says, "We feel strongly that a strong downtown is also a reflection of a strong surrounding economy. It's also a community on the verge of growth."
Siders says, "We're in the process of creating our image campaign. The goal is to relocate ten to fifteen families from a large town next to us or from another area." This new hotel will serve as an invitation for more tourists to come, and maybe even stay long enough to become permanent residents.
Wuerflein says, "Levelland is definitely a great place to call home. I would definitely say it's a community that has a lot of pride and that has a lot of purpose and a lot of good things are waiting to happen here."
Along with the Holiday Inn Express, Levelland will soon be home to a Best Western. Both projects are expected to be complete within the next year.
