LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

A Lubbock mother has been charged with abandoning/endangering a child after her 2-year-old daughter was found wandering alone in the 6600 block of Avenue J.

The child said she was trying to walk to her grandmother's house. The mother was found sleeping in a hotel room nearby. The police report says there was a strong odor of marijuana in the room and police found a partially-smoked marijuana cigarette.

24-year-old Mercedes Alvarez was indicted by a Lubbock Grand Jury on Tuesday, charged with criminal neglect from this incident on May 2, 2018.

But this is not her first indictment on this charge. She was previously charged with criminal neglect of this same child on July 13, 2017 when police say she was found in possession of methamphetamine and cocaine.

She is currently out of jail on $10,000 bond.
