Lamesa is 62 miles South of Lubbock on Highway 87. The town was plotted in 1903, and named for its terrain.
Lamesa means table top in Spanish. Now, more than 9,000 people live in Lamesa. It was the hometown of the late Texas Governor Preston Smith. At the age of ten, Preston Smith told his mother he wanted to be the Governor of Texas. 46 years later in 1968, Smith was elected the 38th Governor of Texas. He was also instrumental in putting Texas Tech University on the map. Smith died in 2003.
