Crews began clean up Monday after strong winds ripped through the roof of Memorial Baptist Church early Sunday morning. Winds up to 74 mph are responsible for tearing a large portion of the church's roof off of the building. Wind tore the metal portion of the roof from its hinges and threw it across the road. Police barricaded the area and the roof still sits in the middle of the 39th & Flint, blocking traffic.
Witnesses told NewsChannel 11 they thought it was a tornado but realized it was just very strong winds that caused this damage. Fortunately no one was injured. A contractor will work with the church to remove the roof Monday.
