  • Cystic Fibrosis Test

For couples concerned about a family history of Cystic Fibrosis, a new blood test can help determine their risk of passing along the gene. The Tag-It Cystic Fibrosis test recently received FDA approval as the first DNA based test for the serious, inherited disorder. The blood test can screen couples prior to starting a family, or can be used to test children for the condition. According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, about ten million Americans carry the defective gene but don't know it.

  • Bio-Artificial Kidney

Kidney dialysis cleans blood by filtering it, but the processing also removes helpful components, including molecules that help fight infection. Some acute renal failure patients are participating in a University of Michigan study to test a bio artificial kidney device that could restore those blood factors. The renal assist device works in tandem with a regular dialysis filter. Filtered blood passes through straw like tubes containing kidney cells. The cells help restore natural blood components and boosts production of Cytokines, an immune system molecule.

  • Boiled Hair

It's a fast fix for wet hair, the handheld hair dryer, but some skin and hair experts say your quick dry method could be sapping the beauty out of your hair. The American Academy of Dermatology says the high heat from blow dryers can actually boil water that's in the hair shaft. The super heated hair ends up dry and brittle. Instead, they recommend air drying when possible, and if you do use the dryer, do not dry your hair completely.
