As Hurricane Rita evacuees from Houston and along the Gulf Coast seek shelter, many are heading North to Lubbock. Thursday morning Lubbock hotels are expecting to be filled with evacuees. The Residence Inn at South Loop 289 & University is just one hotel housing many families from Houston. The Lubbock Hotel- Motel Association is expecting a 95 percent occupancy rate through this weekend.
We're told many evacuees are heading to Lubbock because hotels in Fort Stockton, College Station and New Braunfels have no vacancies. This weekend's Tech Football game and Katrina Survivors already occupying local hotels leaves little room for evacuees.
Hotels are approaching guests with reservations to give up their rooms for evacuees. Those who do, will receive a discounted rate at a later time. Lubbock hotels tell us many evacuees have made reservations and will be arriving through out the weekend.
