Light Cigarette Smokers Face Same Risks

Smoking just one cigarette a day can nearly triple your risk of heart disease and lung cancer. That's according to Norway researchers who tracked the health and death rates of almost 43,000 men and women beginning in their 30's or 40's.

For nearly 30 years, the researchers compared the health of non-smokers with people who just smoked between one and five cigarettes a day. Turns out the "light smokers" were almost 3 times more likely to die of coronary artery disease than those who avoided smoking altogether, with an even greater risk of lung cancer among the women, than the men.
