Grand Jury declines charges for couple accused of deadly conduct in Aug. 20 shooting

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A Lubbock County Grand Jury “no billed” or declined to charge 75-year-old Sonja Renfro and 70-year-old James Renfro on Tuesday, after they were accused of deadly conduct in connection with a shooting in the 900 block of Avenue P back on Monday, Aug. 20.

Police were called to the scene at around 2:30 p.m. Monday after neighbors reported an altercation between residents and their neighbor. Shots were fired before police arrived, seriously injuring 46-year-old Ray Delano.

Delano was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and released the same day, according to an LPD news release. Police say the residents were fighting because of a property line dispute.

The Renfros released a statement on Tuesday, Sept. 25 claiming they were wrongfully arrested. Their attorney says another property resident was responsible for the shooting.

In response to the statement, Lubbock Police Chief Greg Stevens released his own statement Tuesday evening. “We are disappointed in the Grand Jury’s decision with regard to this case and take exception with the inflammatory statements made by the involved suspects earlier today. The arrests in this case were made pursuant to arrest warrants based upon conclusive facts and evidence, including video evidence.”
