Evacuees Head Home - KCBD NewsChannel 11 Lubbock

Evacuees Head Home

More than 700 Hurricane Rita evacuees found a safe place right here in Lubbock. On Monday many of them are relieved to be on their way home.

Sunday night buses filled with 293 evacuees left for Houston. Monday almost 502 Gulf Coast residents remain in Lubbock. 252 are at Reese Center, 146 are staying at the Coliseum. Greg Bruce, Red Cross chairman, tells us those at the Coliseum will be taken to Reese Center.

Officials say most evacuees still in Lubbock are Baytown residents. They are told the city is not ready for their return. Officials say flooding, power outages and problems with water utilities are to blame. The Lubbock Emergency Operations Center will be notified when evacuees can be sent home.
