Preps For Giant Side Of Texas BBQ Cook Off Underway

If you're looking for some down-home food and music then the Giant Side of Texas BBQ Cook off is the place to be. The event kicks off this weekend's Lubbock Music Festival in the Depot District.

Forty teams are competing for the title of 'best barbecue in Lubbock.' Dozens of teams began grilling late Wednesday night. Some have been cooking all night, gearing up for the cook off. Crews blocked off streets from 19th Street & Avenue G to 16th Street.

The BBQ cook off starts Thursday night in the depot district at 5:30. Joe Ely will take the stage at 8 p.m. Tickets for the concert and all you can eat barbecue are $20. Students with a valid ID can get in for $12, tickets for kids are $10 and kids five-years-old and under get in free. You can get your tickets by calling 761-7000. They will also be available at the main gate on 19th Street & Avenue G, between South Beach night Club and The Buddy Holly Center.

The event is sponsored by The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the African American Chamber of Commerce.

We spoke with Eddie McBride, president of the Lubbock Chamber, and he tells us so far there are no plans to move the concert if there is severe weather.
