Space Heater Safety

You're probably turning on your heater for the first time this season but be careful. 600 people die in their homes each year from heating hazards.

The Lubbock Fire Department warns space heaters are only safe if they are placed three feet away from anything that can catch fire. Turn them off whenever you leave the house. Lieutenant Mark Ethridge says, "One of the worst things you could do is walk in your house trip on the cord turn the heater over then it might start a fire."

Space heaters caused two fires on the South Plains last winter.
