United Way Raises 2.5 Million at Half-Way Mark

Wednesday afternoon organizers revealed The Lubbock Area United Way has raised 2.5 million dollars halfway through this year's campaign. That's 49% of the 4.4 million dollar goal for the year. Most of that money is rasied through employee campaigns. NewsChannel 11's Suleika Acosta reports.

United Way helps fund 24 local non profit agencies in Lubbock. Community donations provide the money needed to sustain organizations like the American Red Cross and Salvation Army. But it's money from Lubbock's workforce that makes up more than half of those donations.

Every year, United Way Organizers make a plea to local businesses. Today, volunteers are speaking to Cox Communications Employees about the campaign and the impact donations make on the community. "The biggest donations come from these employee funds," explains United Way Volunteer Steve Moore. He says the majority of donations come from the pockets of employees like these. "The people that you wouldn't think donate are the ones that are doing all the donating," adds Steve.

Employee donations make up about 75% of the entire campaign. Cox Communications is no exception. Last year Cox Employees gave $36,000 from their paychecks. This year, their goal is to give $40,000. "They fall in our top 50 employee campaigns in the community, without companies like Cox our campaign would not see the numbers we get," says Workplace Campaign Director Matt Stephens. He says companies like Cox make United Way a success. "We are very flattered and humbled and appreciative of the community stepping forward, so it's going great," adds Matt.

United Way relies on 215 companies to encourage their employees to donates. Here at NewsChannel 11, more than 90 % of employees donate to the campaign from their salaries.

After the presentation one Cox Employee tells us he plans to give to the campaign too. "I think it's a great thing that they're doing. I'm glad that they're doing it. I feel it's an important thing to have in the community and I'm glad to help," says Employee Garrett Wheeler.

This year United Way has a goal to raise nearly $4.4 million . The goal is 3.5% more than the amount raised last year. The campaign runs from August until the end of November.
