This week ends the first month of flu season. The CDC describes flu activity as sporadic in a just handful of states. Texas is one of those states. So we know it's out there, but the impact so far is definitely milder than usual for this time of year.
People considered "high risk" for the flu should have been vaccinated already, since the health department reserved its first shipment for those who need it most. Starting Monday, anyone can roll up their sleeve and get a flu shot. This year, there is plenty to go around. Lots of agencies and stores are offering the flu shot for between 20 to 35 dollars. The health department is giving those shots to adults for 15 dollars, and they will take medicare, and for kids, the flu shot is just 10 dollars. Call for clinic times. The health department has a recorded message at this number (806)775-2933.
