A new survey of more than 11-hundred smokers show that most are misinformed. That men and women smokers mistakenly believe that Nicotine causes cancer, and that smoking "light" cigarettes are less harmful to their health.
First, the nicotine myth. The report given to the American College of Chest Physicians said people smoke because they are addicted to nicotine, but it's the tobacco that is so deadly. So, those who want to kick the habit, might try turning to products that don't have tobacco, like nicotine inhalers. As far as the light cigarettes, researchers know now that people who smoke those actually inhale more deeply to get the rush that they want, and that's why a "light" drag is, in effect, more dangerous.
The study was led by researchers North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System and presented at Chest 2005, 71st annual international assembly of the American College of Chest Physicians.
