100 Lubbockites are now paying back retailers they wrote hot checks to.
The District Attorney's Office organized a county-wide check raid Thursday night and arrested 100 people for writing hot checks. The people were then offered the chance to pay restitution or go to jail. Friday morning, small business owners met with the district attorney's office to brainstorm ideas on how to decrease hot check writing in Lubbock.
"When we don't get paid, that in turn hurts our bottom line of being able to pay our bills," said Marie Awanessian, with Dr. Grimes' Dental Office.
Last year, the hot check task force was able to return more than $2 million in restitution and fees to local merchants.
