Lubbock Flu Shots Scarce, But Not Because Of A Shortage

Flu shots are in short supply in Lubbock tonight. The good news is there haven't been any reported flu cases in the state of Texas. You probably remember long lines last year when a flu shortage was announced. This year, the problem isn't blamed on a shortage, but on distribution. NewsChannel 11's Jennifer Vogel called several clinics to find out what the hold up is and when you can get your shot.

Flu makers increased their dosages from 61 million to 80 million this year. But the Lubbock Health Department is one of many clinics that is still waiting for its next supply.

'Out of adult flu shots.' That is the sign has been posted outside the Lubbock County Health Department since the end of October. As of Wednesday, they still don't have the vaccines. Beckie Brawley says, "We probably get 100 phone calls a day from people inquiring about the flu vaccine." That's because the flu shot is in short supply all across Lubbock and the state. Brawley says, "A lot of private offices here have been calling me because they don't have vaccines for their clients and they're telling me their orders have been cancelled or delayed."

Statewide, the delay is blamed on slow production by drug companies but the delay in shipping is still uncertain. Beckie says, "We have ample vaccines, but we can't find why they're not shipped, it's a mystery to all of us." But even though the drugs are running late, it's not too late to get your flu shot. "You can get them through November even to December we give them through March."

The health department still has flu vaccines for children and babies available right now. And they've already given out over 2,000 adult flu shots this season. Most of those went to high-risk adults. They're still waiting for an order of 960 doses. The pharmaceutical company tells those doses should arrive by next Friday.

If you can't wait, there is a flu shot clinic this weekend. Both Wal-Mart locations will be administering flu shots from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday. Shots are $24.
