Major Restaurant Chain To Break Ground at Overton Park

The nation's largest redevelopment project is attracting some of the nation's most recognizable chains. NewsChannel 11 learned Chili's Restaurant is weeks away from breaking ground at Overton Park.

The Centre at Overton Park looks completely different than it did just 11 months ago. Shops have moved in and apartments are almost all occupied. Developers have knocked down over a thousand structures to clear the way for the nation's largest redevelopment project.

"It's getting to the exciting part now and starting to see new bricks and mortars going up now instead of going down," said McDougal Companies President, Delbert McDougal.

Lubbock's third Wal-Mart Supercenter is now under construction. It's set to open in June. Several other retailers will build right next to Wal-Mart.

Starbucks is now weeks away from opening. Behind Starbucks, a restaurant/ pub will soon break ground.

City Bank was the first Overton business to open in July. Branch manager, Stan Mayfield, said it's exciting to finally see everything fall into place.

"There's a lot of excitement every time people come here, they love this area and what's going on and certainly they love our location and our building and what's being done here," said Mayfield.

Overton Park is proving to be a viable place for business. In fact, the Overton Park City Bank at one point was opening over 100 new accounts a day and they're still opening new accounts.

"I think Delbert had a vision that not many people shared initially," said Mayfield, "but he had the vision and I think he was right, I think the city was right for it."

A 180 square foot upscale retail center will soon occupy the empty space adjacent to City Bank. McDougal said everything should be under construction and nearing completion by the end of 2006.

"To have a completely new part of town with shopping and just really a little city within a city itself is something I think is exciting for the entire community."

An upscale hotel is also expected to be built in the Overton area. An announcement is expected on that in the next three months.
