The Texas Department of Transportation is taking a look at improving a road traveled by Frenship students and parents. TX-DOT is working to widen FM 179 to seven lanes to help decrease the number of car accidents. NewsChannel 11's Suleika Acosta shows us why police say widening the road will make it more safe.
Wolfforth Police say they investigate about two accidents a week on FM 179. TXdot's proposal is to widen the road to seven lanes from Loop 193 to 66th Street. That includes the area in front of Frenship High School.
"We can say there are anywhere from one to two accidents per week at 179 and Donald Preston Drive in that neighborhood. There are a few others that we investigate there further South in front of the high school we run into about two to six accidents a month," says Officer Rick Scott.
We're told the plan is to complete the project by Summer of 2007. Right now state funding is only covering part of the improvements but we're told they are asking the City of Wolfforth to help fund the project.
The public will have the chance to review the improvements and voice their opinions. Tuesday night TX-DOT is holding a public hearing to discuss the widening of FM 179. It's starts at 6 p.m. at Frenship High School South Cafeteria. Everyone is invited.
