Karen Holt has taught 7th grade English at Frenship for the past thirty-five years, so long that she's now teaching the children of some of her former students. And that is just one way Mrs. Holt is leaving a legacy at Frenship Junior High. "
When I was growing up my dad always would say to me, 'Karen you make a good teacher.'" Said Holt, remembering why she became a teacher. And a good teacher is exactly what Mrs. Holt has become. "She is the best teacher I have had." Remarked Jordan Scott, a student of Mrs. Holt. "Just a wonderful teacher." Said Jordan Watt, another student.
And part of the reason Mrs. Holt is so unforgettable is the unique environment she creates inside the classroom. When students enter her room they are able to keep a stuffed animal for the durration of class. "The stuffed animals are just a way for them to have a comfort object. Sometimes they are going through pretty tough times in their own lives and just to be able to come in and cuddle a stuffed animal is kinda comforting." Said Holt.
Jordan Scott has one that is helping her get through the year. "I like one in particular it's a just a little baby that is dressed up as a tiger." Said Scott. "Even though they are thirteen or fourteen year olds inside they still have little kid hearts. And I guess that is the part that we appeal to in this classroom" Said Holt. "It is kinda like a home away from home. Because it is like comforting and stuff." Said Watt.
And come test time Mrs. Holt has a special treat she shares with her students. "We have a container of smart pills. And the kids will ask, 'How do you know that these are smart pills?' And I will say well they have a "S"' on them." Said Holt. "I don't think she is like any other teacher." Said Watt. "I just want to thank her for every thing she has taught me." Said Scott. "I have so many special teacher memories. I tell the kids that they are like teacher pay checks. You can't cash them at the mall, but this moment I am having right now is a teacher pay check. And it is one that will always stay in your heart." Said Holt.
When Mrs. Holt is not teaching she is the band mom for Frenship High School. She first took the title years ago when her daughters were twirlers. Next week we will be taking a break to let all local teachers celebrate Thanksgiving.
