It's official, Texas Tech Chancellor Dr. David Smith is a finalist for the University System of Georgia's Chancellor search.

NewsChannel 11 first broke the story Friday night. We told you Chancellor Smith had interviewed for the position and was a finalist. We now know he's one of three finalists. The other two are Erroll Davis, Chairman of Alliant Energy Corporation in Wisconsin and Dr. Daniel Papp, Senior Vice Chancellor for academics at the University System of Georgia.

Chancellor Smith told NewsChannel 11 he is honored to be considered for the position but said he did not seek the opportunity out. He went on to say "I already have a great job at the Texas Tech University System. We have many exciting challenges and opportunities in front of us and I remain focused on the work that needs to be done at our outstanding university system."

Texas Tech Regent Chair Rick Francis said the regents would hate to lose Chancellor Smith but said they support his decision. The Georgia Board of Regents is expected to announce their selection next month.
