Truck Fire Causes Delays On US 84

Thanksgiving travel hit a snag for many drivers heading to and from Lubbock.

DPS Troopers were still detouring some traffic around 10pm Wednesday night on U.S. 84, in southeast Lubbock County. This had been going on since 4:30 Wednesday afternoon, when a cotton module truck caught fire. Sparks from the blaze caused additional grass fires and slow moving traffic resulted in several accidents. In one case, a pickup truck caught fire. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in any of the accidents.

One driver, who was on her way to Amarillo from Abilene, told us she was praying for the others on the road and seconds later she got into an accident herself. "We got into this lane and tried to stop and pray at the same time, but she made a complete stop before we could stop. We thank God we're still alive," said Janice Holliman.

DPS Troopers tell us they cannot let traffic through until the accident scenes are clear and that may not be until midnight.
