DPS Troopers Receive Purple Heart Award

They nearly lost their lives just doing their jobs, but now two DPS Troopers are the recipients of the department's newest honor "The Purple Heart."

DPS honored Corporal James Haley of Amarillo and Sgt. Wayne Buxton of Hale Center. In 1988, a drunk driver hit Haley during a traffic stop. Doctors told Haley he would never walk again, but Haley has since returned to full time duty. Buxton was also able to return to work after nearly losing his right leg when he was hit by another car during a chase.
