You can now take the interim out of his title and call Matt Powell, Lubbock County District Attorney.
Governor Rick Perry appointed Matt Powell to the criminal district attorney seat. Powell has been serving as acting district attorney since September when Bill Sowder was sworn in as judge of the 99th district court.
Powell says, "We've been short a lawyer since Bill left. Now we can hire an attorney and implement some of the things I wanted to do to put my fingerprint on this office."
Powell says his office will take an aggressive focus on prosecuting crimes against the children and elderly, intoxicated manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid. Wednesday's announcement does not effect Powell's campaign for district attorney. The appointment is to serve through the term so you will still see Powell's name on the ballot. So far he's running against Lubbock attorney Tommy Turner.
