Connection Between Brain Size & Alzheimers

Determining who is at risk of Alzheimers could someday be as simple as measuring the size of the brain.

Researchers in the Netherlands have found that atrophy, or shrinkage, in two parts of the brain may predict which healthy elderly people will suffer from dementia within six years. Compared to healthy brains, those with dementia were 17 percent smaller in size.

The report in the Archives of General Psychiatry says this new information could help identify who's at high risk for dementia, even before memory problems occur.
