A simple new test for bladder cancer is four times more sensitive than traditional lab tests.
This study is in JAMA, but the research comes from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston where they enrolled nearly 700 patients with a history of bladder cancer to try this new test. It works by finding elevated amounts of a certain protein in the urine.
Doctors can give it in the office and see the results in less than an hour. It's about 50% effective, but the current tests are only 12% effective and take about a week to get the results.
So researchers are hopeful that this new test will provide a better way to find bladder cancer faster and treat it sooner.
