State Commission Gets Lubbock Input On School Finance

Texas legislators are trying to meet a June 1st deadline, but they're getting some help from Lubbockites first.

The Texas Tax Reform Commission met in Lubbock Monday morning to gather ideas on how to reform tax structure. Governor Rick Perry created the commission in September after the Texas Supreme Court ruled the state's school property tax structure unconstitutional. The goal is to determine how to lower property taxes and finance schools.

"These issues are not new to legislature, we've debated them before, the players will be the same, the issues are the same. We've got to have the courage because the stakes are very high with the June 1st deadline," Senator Robert Duncan said.

Governor Rick Perry is expected to call a Special Session on school finance this spring.
