Search for New Texas Tech Chancellor Begins Monday

The search for a new Texas Tech Chancellor will officially begin Monday.

Regents are expected to take up the issue in a morning conference call. On the agenda: accepting Chancellor Dr. David Smith's resignation. Smith resigned last week after four years on the job. Regents are also expected to form two committees to name an interim chancellor and full time replacement.

Among the possible candidates:

  • Former Tech Deputy Chancellor Dr. Mike Moses
  • Former Congressman Kent Hance
  • Former Tech Regent Bryan Newby
  • Former Speaker of the Texas House Pete Laney
  • Don Powell, father of the Lubbock D.A., and currently in charge of rebuilding efforts on the Gulf Coast.

Regents say ideally, they'd like a new chancellor in place by the Fall semester.
