Driver of High Speed Chase Surrenders

A robbery suspect is in the Lubbock County Jail after leading authorities on a high speed chase. 25-year-old Edward Wayne Barnett, is charged with aggravated robbery, evading arrest and felony theft.

Police say Barnett held up the EZ Loan Money Store at 50th and Avenue Q around 2:30 Saturday afternoon. They say he then fled in the clerk's car. Barnett led authorities on a 40 mile chase along I-27, with speeds topping 100 miles per hour. DPS officers laid out spike strips in an attempt to stop Barnett, but even with one tire blown out, he continued for another 10 miles.

He left the highway between Hale Center and Plainview. Heat from the car sparked a grass fire, that also ignited the vehicle itself.

Barnett finally surrendered after a series of failed attempts to board a passing train.
