Yawning: Intentional or Involuntary?

It is widely assumed that yawning occurs because we are tired or bored and scientists tend to agree that it is an involuntary reflex from a brief lack of oxygen.

Sounds good...but that theory doesn't explain why yawning is contagious or why a fetus yawns in the womb...because unborn babies aren't even breathing yet.

So, the answer is that scientists don't know why we yawn, but most agree it is unfair to assume that a yawn means someone is bored.
