BBB Issues Check Scamming Alert

Scammers are trying to steal "checking account numbers" from South Plains residents. The Better Business Bureau is issuing an alert after numerous complaints.

Someone is calling homes, saying you will be rewarded money if you give them your checking account number. Better Business Bureau President Nan Campbell says so far, only seniors citizens have been targeted. "If you know of a senior citizen that lives alone or might need to know this information, pass it on."

Campbell says protect yourself against identity theft. Never give your personal information out over the phone unless you're the one initiating the phone call. If you feel you're being scammed, get the business's name, city and report it to the Better Business Bureau. Their number is (806) 763-0459.

Campbell also suggests registering with both the Texas and national Do Not Call registries to cut down on telemarketing calls.
