Swimming can be a rigorous and challenging sport for students. One LISD swim coach is guiding them all the way to the finish line. NewsChannel 11's Suleika Acosta takes us on this lap of Teacher You Can Count On.
"We talk a lot about discipline, being part of a team," says Swim Coach Trey Hayes. - A team they are. Coach Hayes leads these high school swimmers. Coaching, supporting and pushing them every day.
"He definitely keeps you focused and he puts everything in a realistic aspect," says Swimmer Cammy Hopkins. For many of these students, Coach Hayes has coached them since they were sixth graders. "I love them just like they were my own kids," he says.
"Coach Hayes is like the father figure of the swim team," says Cammy. And that's exactly what he tries to be. His strategy is simple: making these students the best swimmers they can be while preparing them for the swim meet of life. "If you're having a bad race, he reminds you that everyone has bad races, it's not just you," adds Cammy.
By teaching students to set goals and giving them the tools to achieve them, Coach Hayes says he's preparing his swimmers for the challenges that are ahead. "If I have some part in making them become responsible adults, that's wonderful," he adds.
