A laser developed for treating the prostate, is now being used to treat the face.
The problem is rosacea, a skin disease that affects about 14 million Americans. It's harmless, but annoying. And now, the Gemini laser if providing some relief.
"We usually trace the vessel out, and the bright green light is absorbed by the blood vessel, converts to heat and the heat shrinks down the vessel. What's nice about this laser is it comes with a cool tip, very ice-cold tip, through which the laser light is shot. That makes it less uncomfortable, and helps to prevent and reduce swelling," says Dr. Jeffrey Dover, a dermatologist.
There is no cure for rosacea, but Dr. Dover says the laser is used like a paint brush to decrease the redness of the skin. The procedure takes about 20 to 30-minutes, but it may require more than one treatment.
More and more dermatologists are using a laser to treat rosacea. So, if you want to get rid of that flushed look that comes with the condition, ask your doctor about new laser treatments for rosacea.
