"One Guy From Italy" has been located across from Texas Tech for almost twenty years now. It's just one of the business that was given just five days notice that they must move out.
The new owners of the University Plaza complex sent an email on Tuesday to the four businesses currently located below the U.P. apartments. The email stated that all utilities would be turned off Monday and businesses were to move out to make way for a twenty million dollar renovation.
The sudden action has not only shocked business owners, but their customers as well.
"After eighteen years it is coming to an end," stated Dario Yocum, part owner of "One Guy's."
Now the love affair between Dario Yocum and "One Guy From Italy" has lasted more than eighteen years. Even though he is being forced to shut his doors Yocum has a good feeling about the future.
"The friendships don't ever end, and like I said it is just a new journey. We've got to take it one step at a time," said Yocum.
For Philip Jones and his family One Guys holds a special place in their lives.
"For the last five to six years our family has been coming here every Wednesday night before going to church. We know that when we walk through the doors that Dario's going to yell our name out at us, and greet us. And it is like our own little Cheers" said Philip Jones, long time customer of "One Guy's".
"Wednesday when we were here to eat dinner, Dario told us that it would be our last Wednesday night that he was going to be closed up," said Jones.
The closing of the University location doesn't mean the end of "One Guy's." They will still have their other location on 50th Street. Even though the pizza and the calzone's will still be around it is the memories that make this "One Guy's" so special.
" 'One Guy's' is the location of our first date, and that was almost twelve years ago. We celebrate our ten year anniversary in June, and we have a four year old. So, that is what happens when you eat at One guys" said both Brook and Amanda Roberts, also long time customers of "One Guy's."
"One Guy From Italy" will be closing their door to the public for the last time tomorrow. We were told that owners are looking for a new location around the Texas Tech campus and once a location is found "One Guy" will reopen as soon as possible.
