An inappropriate text message has led to charges for a former Slaton teacher. 32-year-old Abelardo Tomas Mata was arrested Tuesday and charged with "online solicitation of a minor."
Slaton police tell us Mata sent a sexually suggestive message to the cell phone of a 13-year-old student. School officials say on February 17th, the student showed the principal the text message. They say Mata was asked to resign from the school. Meanwhile, the district is reviewing their cell phone policies. The State Board of Education is looking at revoking Mata's teaching license.
Parents of the student tell NewsChannel 11 she is struggling at school, and has not been offered counseling. Right now the family is speaking with an attorney. As of Thursday morning, Mata is free on a $30,000 bond.
