Dr. Roy Wilson is the sole finalist for a top job at the University of Colorado at Denver.
Dr. Wilson is the President of the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. He is an internationally recognized glaucoma specialist in his own right and was brought to Lubbock in 2003.
Now, he has been named the only finalist to take over the chancellor's job at the University of Colorado at Denver. The position controls the University and the Health Sciences Center. It would also mean serving as Chairman of the Board at that university hospital.
He says he interviewed for the position at the Denver airport on Sunday. Since then, he has been invited back to tour the campus as the sole finalist. He says it would be sad for him and his wife Suzanne to leave Lubbock but adds that Colorado presents an exciting opportunity. There, he would be leading both the university and the health sciences center. Wilson says, "I am a finalist but there is an interesting process I still have to go through. The faculty will still have to like me. Both institutions and the board of regents will have to endorse my candidacy. It's not a done deal but I'm excited that we are at the stage we are at." Wilson says he was not looking for another job.
The news comes just weeks after the resignation of Texas Tech Chancellor Dr. David Smith, but Dr. Wilson says his interview with the University of Colorado has nothing to do with any staff changes at Texas Tech.
