The execution of a Lubbock man will proceed as planned next week. 27-year-old Robert Salazar Junior is convicted in the 1997 murder of 2-year-old Adriana Gomez. Last week, he appealed for a stay of execution on the grounds of mental retardation and lost.
According to court records, Salazar was watching his girlfriend's daughter when the beating occurred. Testimony indicates the internal injuries were comparable to that of a severe car accident. Salazar then put the girl back in her crib - and went out for a beer.
Salazar's execution is scheduled for Wednesday, March 22, 2006.
