Link Between Genes & Eczema

A new genetic discovery may bring relief to people with severe eczema.

Researchers in Denmark have found that over half the eczema patients studied are missing a copy of a gene that makes a protein that helps protect the skin. Researchers believe that normally that protein, called filaggrin, work as a skin block, but someone with half the gene has low levels of the protein, allowing foreign stuff to pass through the skin and develop into thick, itchy patches.

So, the good news is scientists are now looking for a way to build up that protein to make up for what is missing in the gene.
