Diabetes Alert Program

Tuesday, the American Diabetes Association and the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center teamed up to "sound the alert" about diabetes.

More than a million people develop this disease ever year. And on this annual diabetes alert day, people like Amy Holmes came forward to pray for a cure.

"In my life, a cure for diabetes would change everything. It would mean that I wouldn't have to worry that my husband was going to suffer complications from this disease. It would mean that I wouldn't have to stick my baby's finger four thousand times a year. It would be life changing or so many people," said Amy, who's daughter, husband, and father all have diabetes.

The School of Nursing at Texas Tech is providing this diabetes quiz for you to see if you are high risk for the disease. Just answer yes or no.

  • Are you more than 40 years old?
  • Are you African-American, Latino, Native American or Asian?
  • Do you *not* exercise regularly? Meaning less than 3 times a week.
  • Do you have a parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle who has diabetes?
  • Are you overweight?
  • Are you thirsty and urinate often?
  • Do you have tingling or numbness in your toes or feet?
  • Do you have blurry vision?
  • Have you had a baby weighing more than 9 pounds?
  • Are you often fatigued?

Now count the "yes" answers. If you said yes more than 3 times, you should be screened for diabetes as soon as possible. And Texas Tech's Wellness Clinic offers diabetes screening for just $5. The clinic is located at 301 40th Street.
