Using plants to help lower blood pressure. That's what one Upward Bound student found when researching the medical benefits of plants.
Dozens of area high school Upward Bound students picked a plant and researched its medical benefits, and Saturday they presented their findings at Texas Tech.
Lucy Gonzalez wants to study pharmacy so she chose to research the Neem plant. She says her research shows how the plant can help regulate heart rates and lower blood pressure and cholesterol.
"It was used for dental uses and different stuff and it's there, it's a plant. It's easy to just extract the information from it," Gonzalez said.
Upward Bound serves high school students from low income families or students whose parents did not earn a bachelors degree.
