What is the Job of the Lubbock County Clerk?

The Lubbock County Clerk serves a four-year-term and has a salary of $53,000. Doris Ruff is the current County Clerk. She says not many people know what her duties are. In fact, her office once received a call about freezing a ham!

"A typical day for me would be varied in the task," answered Doris. On average, 300 records are filed at the county clerks office on any given month. Anything from criminal misdemeanor, civil and probate court records. "I do know we get lots of calls about license plates and varied other things that do happen at the county but not this office," said Doris.

Doris has spent 38 years in the office, but the last seven of those years, she has managed the entire department as the elected county clerk. "We're also over the trust funds. Military discharges are filed with us," said Doris.

"Do you know what our county clerk does here in town?" asked NC 11. "I have no idea," said one man. "That's all paper work and they do a lot of the services for the county," answered a woman.

Doris says most people know the county clerk keeps records of the real estate deeds in the county, with some of those dating back to the 1800's. Right now, the county clerk is busy trying to transfer those real estate records on an up-to-date imaging system.

She says her job as a clerk is never dull. Doris says the reason why she's not running again is because she wants to spend more time with her family and take more trips.
