Women's Ovary Removal Creates Risk

Women who have their ovaries removed are at an increased risk for dementia.

That's according to researchers from the Mayo Clinic, who studied thousands of women. They say the risk is even greater for women who have one or both ovaries removed at a younger age before reaching their mid-40's.

The theory is that estrogen plays a role in protecting the brain from aging, and estrogen levels are decreased when ovaries are removed.
