Autism Awareness and Information Available In Lubbock

Did you know that 1.5 million Americans have some form of autism? Experts say that number is growing and in the next decade it could reach more than 4 million Americans. This morning NewsChannel 11's Suleika Acosta learned about autism and how it is treated.

We spent the morning at the Burkhart Center for Autism Education and Research at Texas Tech. April is Autism Awareness Month. Autism is a disorder in the brain that affects areas of social interaction and communication skills. Early diagnosis is key, before the age of three. Researchers are still trying to find out what causes Autism. They believe it could be linked to genetics or environmental factors.

Families on the South Plains can get information at The Burkhart Center for Autism and Education and Research. For more information ( click here).
