In less than 48 hours state lawmakers will meet for a special session on school finance. The 30 day special legislative session starts Monday.
The State Supreme Court set a June first deadline for the state to figure out how to designate money other than property taxes to finance schools.
Senator Robert Duncan says the state could use this special session to consider education initiatives including teacher pay raises, he also says this overhaul has been needed.
"The most conservitive approach to a tax plan is to provide a tax system with a broad tax base with a low rate. And I belive the senate is prepared to vote on something like that," Duncan told NewsChannel 11 in a phone interview.
Cheri Isett will be sitting in for her husband, Carl Isett who's also a commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Right now he's on active duty in Kuwait. Cheri also says it's time for a change and is excited about her first special session.
"I feel very confident in being able to hit the ground running knowing what the issues are. I have got a lot to learn in the prosses and I fully recognize that I am the newby but I really do feel like I have a handle on the policy," said Isett.
Lawmakers have until June first to come up with a plan.
