38 Inmates Released from Lubbock County Jail Due to Overcrowding
As of Friday afternoon, the Lubbock County Jail had handed out "get out of jail free cards" to 38 inmates.
NewsChannel 11 told you Thursday this would happen as a result of overcrowding. Officials reviewed the jail population and selected inmates who were not considered a flight risk or a threat to public safety. Of all the inmates released, two were in jail on felony charges and the rest had misdemeanors.
Overcrowding may not be a problem come 2007 when the new jail is completed. It will hold twice the capacity of the current jail.
There is no room at the Lubbock County Jail and Lubbock County is planning to release some inmates early. NewsChannel 11's Cecelia Coy talked to county officials to find out what is causing the problem.
