As of Friday afternoon, the Lubbock County Jail had handed out "get out of jail free cards" to 38 inmates.
NewsChannel 11 told you Thursday this would happen as a result of overcrowding. Officials reviewed the jail population and selected inmates who were not considered a flight risk or a threat to public safety. Of all the inmates released, two were in jail on felony charges and the rest had misdemeanors.
Overcrowding may not be a problem come 2007 when the new jail is completed. It will hold twice the capacity of the current jail.
