Time is running out for independent candidates to collect the more than 45,000 signatures they need to get their names on the November ballot.
Gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman made an appearance in Lubbock Friday. By the time Friedman must turn in his petition, he predicts he'll have over 100,000 signatures. He says it will be the first time in 147 years that a true independent will be on the ballot. Friedman said, "I'm the only one who is not a politician. I've got no political experience. I'm 61 which is too young for Medicare and too old for women to care, basically. But, I care about Texas and that is why I'm running for governor."
The other gubernatorial candidate running as an independent is Carole Keeton Strayhorn. She was in town earlier this week. Both have until May 10th to turn in their petitions. Republican incumbent Governor Rick Perry is already on the ballot along with Democrat Chris Bell.
