The fire started just before 4 a.m. at Southwest Private School located at 3808 Quaker. Crews responded with three engine trucks initially but called out three more fire trucks to assist. 45 fire fighters remain on the scene trying to put out the fire in the second story portion of the building.
Police closed Quaker Avenue between 36th Street and 40th Street. They also closed 38th Street just west of Quaker. Crew shut off electricity of neighboring homes. Neighbors were not evacuated since the fire was contained to the structure.
Southwest Private School was built in 1968 with almost 80 students enrolled in the pre-school. Celia Pruitt, the school's owner, tells us a parent's meeting will be held at 12:30 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church, 4402 40th Street.
