West Texas Home Builders Association Set Traps for Thieves

Tuesday morning around 6:30, a suspect who was on a mission to steal probably did not think any one was watching him. He was wrong.

The West Texas Home Builders Association, along with a local alarm company called 1st Alarm, have teamed up to stop construction site thefts. They hope hidden surveillance camera can help. What was caught on tape was the man either pulling or cutting a live wire straight from the ground.

"It's 50 amp service to the house. It is heavy gage wire. It actually had power in it," said Carl Russell, WTHBA Board of Directors member.

Russell says they put several cameras up at the 2006 Parade of Homes site two months ago. He says it was time to try and catch thieves in the act.

First alarm co-owner, Larry LeBlanc, says he feels cameras are the only way to curb construction site theft. "We haven't been here long and already we've got several pieces of footage; still shots and video clips of perpetrators in different acts," said LeBlanc.

He says cameras at construction sites are fairly new to Lubbock. But believes it is a concept that will catch on fast with other builders and developers.

If you recognize the person in the video, call CrimeLine at 741-1000 .
