If you plan to hit the road this Memorial Day weekend, don't forget to buckle up. NewsChannel 11's Suleika Acosta shows us how authorities are focusing on safe driving.
The Click It Or Ticket Campaign is underway. If you drive South Loop 289 you may have noticed a sign reminding you to buckle up. It's part of the campaign to increase safety belt use. According to national traffic statistics, Texas leads in traffic fatalities. More than half of those who died in a car accident last year were not wearing a seat belt.
Click It Or Ticket runs through June 4th. DPS Troopers across the state will be watching for seat belt violators during this time.
Troopers will also be watching for drunk drivers on highways. Last year alcohol was a factor in almost half of all fatal traffic accidents in Lubbock. Police say 13 people died in drunk driving related accidents last year. Lubbock police made more than 650 DWI arrests. Authorities zero tolerance when it comes to drunk drivers and seat belt violators.
