The most recent killed from the South Plains include those serving in Iraqi Operation Freedom:
Marine Private First Class and Lubbock native Ricky Morris died on march 18, 2003. The 20-year-old was killed when a humvee ran over a landmine.
Marine Private First Class Chad Bales was killed a month later in a convoy accident. The former Muleshoe resident was 20-years-old.
Army Specialist Israel Garza was killed on April 4, 2004 when his convoy was attacked. Garza lived in Lubbock. He was 25-years-old.
