Clovis and Portales residents can breathe a sigh of relief. Cannon Air Force Base has a new mission.
The base faced closure by the Pentagon unless it could name a new mission. Tuesday, the Base Realignment and Closure Commission decided to turn the base into a special operations base. It will be home to the Air Force's 16th Special Operations wing within the next two years.
The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce released a statement Tuesday, congratulating the residents on their efforts to save the base. The chamber says Lubbock is a popular destination for military families and will also benefit from the decision.
